Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father had left, the Ford family was taken care of by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. In her childhood Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford began to be fascinated by acting at the age of teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a week she decided it wasn't for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
